Comic Reviews 03.29.2021

Hey y’all. We have a pretty fun group of comics this week. Combined with yesterday’s Featured Review, Detective Comics #1034, this may have been one of the best weeks since I started doing these reviews. I have high hopes for all the comics going forward and am excited to share that with you. So, let’s keep this intro short and get to the comics!

Look! Its Gorilla Gregg!

Spoilers for:  Miles Morales: Spider-Man #24, Amazing Spider-Man #62, Titans Academy #1

Featured Review: Detective Comics #1034

Detective Comics #1034

Writer: Mariko Tamaki; Joshua Williamson

Artist: Dan Mora, Gleb Melnikov

Colors: Jordie Bellaire

Letters: Aditya Bidikar; ALW’s Troy Peteri

Cover: Mora

The Batfamily comics are in a really good place right now. Batman is telling interesting stories about “poor” Batman, Nightwing had an incredible first issue under its new creative team, The Joker is mediocre but has the building blocks of something potentially special, Batman: Urban Legends is a quality anthology, Tom Taylor and Andy Kubert are launching a Batman-in-Europe miniseries, and Robin has a promising, martial arts-focused series on the horizon. That is a varied lineup covering many of the traditional Batman bases. So where does that leave Detective Comics?

News Roundup 03.24.2021

Hey y’all. We have a big roundup this week as I’ve been waiting weeks for enough news to do one of these updates. There is not much blog news to announce. I am going to continue reviewing The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, though the exact timeframe between the episode airing and the review going up is still up in the air. It may be Saturday like WandaVision or Tuesday. I’m still working out the schedule. The currently planned post for this Friday will be Zack Snyder’s Justice League related. It probably won’t be a straight review, but we’ll see how it turns out.

Anyway, the news!

Comic Reviews 03.23.2021

Hey y’all. We’ve got a small one this week. I wanted to cover more issues but found myself with little to say about most. Superman Red & Blue #1 is mostly good anthology with some of the coolest art you’ll see. Radiant Black #2 is really good, but not in any way that needs to be discussed. Next week will definitely be bigger though. It will feature Amazing Spider-Man, Miles Morales: Spider-Man, Power Rangers, the debut of Teen Titans Academy, and maybe a few more. Plus, Detective Comics #1034 will get a Featured Review this Sunday. It will be an exciting week for comics.

I might have a Zack Snyder’s Justice League post this Friday. I just have to find the time to rewatch it and make sure I have my ducks in a row, which is quite a time commitment.

Anyway, let’s get to the reviews!

I needed somewhere to put this meet-cute so here.

Spoilers for: Justice League #59, Nightwing #78

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Premiere Review

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s premiere is quite different from that of its immediate predecessor. It is far less ambitious, content to simply be exactly what you likely imagined when you first heard the phrase ‘MCU TV show’: an obnoxious number of quick cuts, largely mediocre action scenes, and charming actors. It also lacks the puzzle box setup of WandaVision, meaning it can tell a more MCU-standard tale. While the seeming lack of ambition is disappointing, it led to a solid debut that has me interested in the themes and ideas it appears to be tackling.

Comic Reviews 03.16.2021

Hey y’all. I apologize for these reviews being late. The last sevenish days have been pretty rough for me so I have not written much at all. But I’m back starting today and have some issues to discuss. I planned to have a few more here but did not have the time to write them. Just know that X-Factor #8, Children of the Atom #1, and Superman #29 are good, but not exceptional. The latter two are promising beginnings to their stories. I also read the debut of Proctor Valley Road and just had nothing to say about it. It is perfectly acceptable with some very pretty art.

Anyway, let’s jump in!

Spoilers for: Amazing Spider-Man #61, Wonder Woman #770, Mighty Morphin’ #5

Comic Reviews 03.08.2021

Hey y’all. It is very nice being back into the swing of these reviews; they are really fun. Bit of a mixed bag this week, but Keanu Reeves does make an appearance so be excited. Yesterday saw the return of the Featured Reviews with Infinite Frontier #0, the kickoff to DC’s next big era. We continue looking at that era here, though it won’t be full tilt for a week or two.

Anyway, onto the reviews!

But first, Gorilla Gregg from Infinite Frontier #0

I am a simple man; I see Gorilla Gregg and I clap. Of course, my thoughts on this issue are more complicated than that, but it is emblematic of my reaction to this issue. This is a comic filled to the brim with intriguing and fan-pleasing moments. Said moments are elevated by the phenomenal art throughout this issue. This is one of the best-looking comics you will read this year.

WandaVision Series Finale Review

Last week, I used this space to lament WandaVision’s lack of creativity and how it has made the show progressively worse. That piece ended with hope though. Hope that the finale could right the wrongs of the preceding episodes and resolve its story in a satisfying manner. So, you may be wondering, did Marvel Studios’ first television series stick the landing?

Full Spoilers for ‘The Series Finale’ follow. You have been warned.

News Roundup 03.03.2021

Hey y’all. We’ve got a ton of news from across the pop culture spectrum today. It is pretty exciting. Before we get to that,  I want to reiterate what I said in Monday’s Comic Reviews: Featured Reviews will be returning this Sunday with Infinite Frontier #0. That may be the longest FR piece I have written because there is a lot going on in it. Also, the schedule is up for $5 patrons (Patreon link at the top of the page).

Anyway, onto the news!

Comics Review 03.01.2021

Hey y’all. We’re back!  The hiatus lasted much longer than I anticipated, but oh well. It was a crazy couple months to start 2021. You will notice there are no DC comics here as I did not want to just cover the final issues of a couple Future State series. Those series ae very mixed in quality, but overall good. DC will return Sunday with the resumption of the Featured Review column, likely covering Infinite Frontier #0. That should be very exciting.

Anyway, let’s get to the reviews!

Spoilers For: Amazing Spider-Man #60, X-Men #18
