News Roundup 03.24.2021

Hey y’all. We have a big roundup this week as I’ve been waiting weeks for enough news to do one of these updates. There is not much blog news to announce. I am going to continue reviewing The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, though the exact timeframe between the episode airing and the review going up is still up in the air. It may be Saturday like WandaVision or Tuesday. I’m still working out the schedule. The currently planned post for this Friday will be Zack Snyder’s Justice League related. It probably won’t be a straight review, but we’ll see how it turns out.

Anyway, the news!

New Nintendo Switch

So, we have known there was a more powerful Switch in development for year. In the most reliable report yet, we now know it will have a 7-inch OLED 720p screen that can produce 4K images when docked. Production is planned to begin this summer, likely for Fall 2021 or Spring 2021 release.

My biggest question is simple: Will the Switch actually be 4K docked/720p handheld? The current edition does not regularly reach 1080p/720p so this incarnation would need to be significantly more powerful. I do not expect that to happen, though it is certainly possible.

There also remains a small chance this is an actual Switch successor. Nintendo releases new consoles every 5ish years so we are getting very close to that. Of course, they could try to avoid a Wii U-esque disaster by iterating on a console that has a shot to outsell the beloved Wii. Only time will tell.

NIS Classics Vol 1 Announced

Coming under the brand new ‘Prinny Presents’ banner, this game is a collection of Phantom Brave: The Hermuda Triangle Remastered and Soul Nomad & The World Eaters. I have zero experience with the latter but am a proud owner of the former on PSP. Despite never having finished the game, I am excited to revisit it as it has some really interesting ideas for a TRPG. Plus, there's another game in the package!

Rune Factory 5 Trailer

Story of Seasons is cool. Action RPGs are cool. Thus, Rune Factory is cool. And there is a new one this year! The home console history of the series is…mixed, but this is a new development team and appears to have a higher budget. There does not appear to be too much new revealed so far, but if it is just a really good one of these, I will be satisfied.

Tales of Arise Trailer

After nearly two years, we finally have a new look at the plot of the first Tales game since the PS3 (Yes, Zestiria and Berseria are both PS3 games). It reminds me quite a bit of aspects of Zestiria. I am just happy the game is on a new engine because the previous one was holding the series back. While I have had the phone game to hold me over for the last year, I have really been hankering for this game. 2021 remains the year all the games targeted at me release.

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Has a Western Release Date

Speaking of games aimed at me, May 25 marks the beginning of my journey beat a mainline Shin Megami Tensei. I have done a couple Personas, Devil Survivor Overclocked, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions, but never a mainline game. Playing it may have to wait because it releases dangerously close to Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Guilty Gear -STRIVE-, three games I have or intend to preorder, and just after Rune Factory 5, Resident Evil Village, and Mass Effect: Legendary Collection, but I am excited to play it soon after.

Forspoken Announced

Ok, technically this was announced last year, but under the working title Project Athia. Now it has the absolutely indelible title Forspoken. Unlike some, I quite enjoy Final Fantasy XV despite its glaring, sometimes exaggerated flaws. This will be the first game from that team since and the second featuring the Luminous Engine. Unlike the PS4 and Xbox One, PS5 might be able to handle this engine. Maybe. The limited looks thus far suggest this will be the best looking PS5 game. Until Naughty Dog joins the party anyway.

Life is Strange: True Colors Announced

Life is Strange is a fantastic series. This one looks promising. I have not played Deck Nine's prior entry in the series Before the Storm, but it is being remastered with the original game to release later this year, so I will finally have chance. I have heard it is mostly good and this game looks quality from the trailer, so I have hope for True Colors despite it not being developed by Dontnod. Also, the protagonist has my name. Neat.

Scarlet Nexus is coming June 25

This game seems cool. Unfortunately, it releases right at the end of the summer onslaught on games and the same day as the new Mario Golf. I will pick it up at some point, though it may have to wait a bit, so I have time to play it. Y’all should get it too so they make more cool games.

The Hellfire Gala is Coming

After having been teased for months, we finally know when and how the Hellfire Gala will arrive.  This summer, the X-Men are getting dressed up for a big even where things probably happen. Told over 12 issues, including Planet-Size X-Men #1, that each tell a different character’s perspective of the affairs that transpire. It seems cool and the outfits the characters will be wearing are divine. See you there in June.

Checkmate Returns

I thought comic was gone. Like gone gone. But it was simply delayed by a year (and probably highly reworked). Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev remain at the helm. Given the quality of prior installments of this story, I want to pass on this. I am, however, a weak-willed fan of both the aforementioned creators so #1 will likely be a Featured Review in June. Look forward to it.
