If Jack does actually become the new God, his experiences in
this episode will surely influence his approach to that role. It is too bad the
story, while entertaining and allowing for a few standout moments, just does
not feel that important. And that is kind of the point. The crew are just
trying to keep Jack busy and allow him to feel helpful so that is to be
expected.
There was a moment in the A-plot that did allow for Castiel
(And Misha Collins) to take center stage, something that has not happened often
this season. He weaves a tale about his relationship with God, spelling out his
character arc over the last 12 seasons. Cas has given a version of this speech
several times throughout the show, but now that he knows exactly what God’s
true nature is and allows for a more powerful speech. Probably my favorite moment
of the episode.
Elsewhere, the Winchesters are Amara hunting. They are
headed to Atlantic City on what amounts to hunch. Turns out they were right,
but Amara catches them en route and they all chill and have a nice breakfast at
a pierogi restaurant. Amara has changed quite a bit since the end of the
eleventh season. She is the peaceful sibling now! She wears pink and eats at pierogi
restaurants. Its all very fun and Swallow seems to have a ball playing the
role.
Recent episodes have spent a not insignificant amount of
time waxing poetic about Amara’s bond with Dean. That makes it fairly obvious
one of two things will happen: Dean will have an active role in her death or their
attempt to kill her will go horribly wrong. Whichever it is, this relationship
is going to break very soon.
Dean does finally have the chance to ask Amara why she
revived his mother. It was an attempt to put out the fire inside Dean. To stop
the anger and give him peace. It did not work. The show has taken many great
pains to point out that Dean can never stop hunting. He will not allow himself.
This has once again become a focal point of Dean’s character throughout this
season. It seems like he will die while fighting. Or Sam dies and Dean has to
learn how to live. We shall see.
So, the boys have Amara on their side, and we know Chuck is
making his way back. Only five episodes remain and that is typically when Supernatural
kicks into high gear. Everything is set for the big blowup and one last twist
that shapes the final episodes. It is both exciting and distressing to head
into the final episodes, but I cannot wait to see what the show does. It will
surely be good.
Best Quotes:
Dean: "You guys go Highway to Heaven that
bitch."
Jack: "I'll get my suit. (To Castiel) Can we wear matching ties?"
Jack: "Agent Lovato, FBI."
Officer: "In the field long, Lovato? You look greener than baby
Yoda."
Castiel: "He's a very smart, very pale young man."
Zack: "No one's making deals. Like, at all. Rowena has
a hard 'people will end up where they belong' philosophy. It can be nice. Less
quotas. But, like, look at me. A crossroads demon who can't bring in a deal?
Like, what even am I?"
Castiel: "You're a deviant soul corrupted by Hell."
Zack: "Yeah, yes, but I mean more in a work-life balance sense?"
