Hey y’all. We’ve got some interesting news to check out this
week. One thing I didn’t have a lot to write about was the whole Xbox Live
price fiasco. I just think it’s funny they tried to double the price of a
service that should be free and got bullied by the internet so hard they
reverse the decision and decided to make it so free-to-play games no
longer required paid XBL—something I was unaware of because no other console or
service would do that. I laughed. A lot.
Anyway, onto the news!
Heroes Reborn Is Back
Spinning out of the Avengers ongoing no one cares about, Marvel
is bringing back the Heroes Reborn branding. Why? Because their next event is a
“reboot” of the universe. Except it seems the majority of comics will continue
telling their stories with no attention being paid to said event.
For those that are unaware, Heroes Reborn was an era of Marvel
comics that virtually no one liked in the ‘90s where everything was rebooted
and Tony Stark—a noted fascist—somehow sucked even more! The biggest series at
the publisher to taken over by former Marvel stars’ studios like WildStorm and Extreme
Studios. They were colossal failures, and the prior status quo was returned
just over a year later.
Why you would want to bring this name back is beyond me.
Also, the story is about the Phoenix saying, “No More Avengers” and somehow
that leads to Doctor Doom being Juggernaut and some other uninteresting mashups.
Hard pass.
Square-Enix’s Tomb Raider Continues…At Netflix
In 2013, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montreal began a rebooted
trilogy of Tomb Raider games, the last of which released in 2013. Not much has
been said about the future of that series. While the gaming future remains
unclear, there is a Netflix anime coming! Netflix is really going in hard on
the animated video game adaptions and I have no idea if that will work for
them. Or even why it is happening. But I liked those games and will probably
check out the initial episode or two of this when it releases.
Capcom Is Trying To Make Resident Evil Multiplayer Again
As a free downloadable add-on to Resident Evil Village,
I have no problem with the existence of Re:Verse. It seems to be a cheap
competitive multiplayer mode that everyone will try that first week and never
touch again. Apparently made of entirely reused (and shrunken)
assets, it does not look particularly good, but it’s free so who cares?
My problem with this game is that it is another attempt at
making a Resident Evil multiplayer game, but they are going about it completely
wrong. Everyone loves Mercenaries mode in Resident Evil 4, 5, and
6. Makes a really good, free-to-play version of that with whatever purchasable
cosmetics you want and you have an instant hit. It really is that easy.
Resident Evil Village Arrives May 7th
So, this game is, in essence, Resident Evil 4. Its
set in what appears to be set in a European village with a castle, features a
(the?) merchant from which guns are purchased, an almost identical inventory system,
and a heavier focus on action than VII. Unfortunately, it remains in the
first-person perspective of its predecessor. Hopefully, it has a bit more of an
idea what it wants to be, unlike that game.
The most important thing here is that a ton of the assets
for this game can be reused for the officially unofficial RE4 remake.
Despite reports that game has switched developers, that reusability will likely
have it on store shelves sooner than later. Maybe they make RE4 the game
everyone remembers instead of what it is.
Also, there's a 1900 yen collector's edition that includes Chris' sick chester coat.
