Anyway, on to the news!
Amazing Spider-Man’s Creative Team And Schedule
Recently, we learned Nick Spencer
will be leaving Amazing Spider-Man and Marvel has take little time
before announcing his replacements. Zeb Wells, Kelly Thompson, Saladin Ahmed,
Cody Ziglar, and Patrick Gleason will be the writers with a rotating group of
artists that may or may not include Gleason. The series is also returning to a
thrice-monthly schedule, thus the need for such a large team. The series has
essentially been on that schedule for some time and will be until Spencer
leaves.
This is quite a collection of
good writers. Ahmed’s work on Miles Morales: Spider-Man (among others) has
been phenomenal. While I have not read Captain Marvel, Thompson wrote some
of the best comics of 2018 and 2019 in Rogue & Gambit and Mr. and
Mrs. X. Wells’ recent work on Hellions has been quite dull, but his
CV is littered with quality work including his prior stint on this very series
during the Brand New Day era! Ziglar is a newcomer to comics and someone who’s
work I have zero experience with, but he is surrounded experts that should be
able to help him transition smoothly. Perhaps most intriguing is Gleason. I have
not read any of his work as a solo writer, but he has cowritten several
exception comics including the Rebirth-era Superman and Super Sons.
It is a fascinating group of writers that make a stellar comic.
I would be remiss to not mention
the star of this new epoch as it is not Peter Parker. Well, unless you ask some
Clone Saga truthers. Trust me, they’re out there. But I digress. Ben Reilly is
back in a cool new suit. Given the way Sinister War is being promoted and
Spencer’s final issue being titled ‘What Cost Victory’, it sure seems Peter is
about to die. I find it more likely he ‘One More Day’ is finally undone, and he
decides to retire, but anything is possible. It’s an exciting time be a
Spider-Man fan!
Al Ewing, Ram V, And Bryan Hitch Are On Venom
I am not much of a Venom fan. Flash
Thompson’s time with the symbiote was easily my favorite because 1. It was an
interesting character unlike, say, Eddie Brock and 2. It was the coolest Venom
ever looked. I am, however, a fan of all three known creators so I may have to
give this series a shot.
Tom Taylor and Iban Coello on Dark Ages
It’s finally coming! A teaser for
this series was published in Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day issue last year. It
was tantalizing and the year long wait for the series has been rough. I need to
know what happens when the world loses electricity!
Anyway, the series debuts in
September and everyone should read it because this creative team should not be
able to fail.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods Costumes Revealed
I like the Shazam Family costumes
from the first film. These are a significant upgrade. Shazam! wanted to
invoke the characters circus origins and did so successfully. However, the
suits just did not fit the aesthetic of the movie. The new outfits feel more in
line with both the aesthetic of the picture and the wider universe it occupies.
My only complaint is that I wish Pedro’s suit were a bit brighter as it is the
only one that does not stand out.
Sasha Calle Supergirl Costume Leaked
I love a Superfamily costume with
red shoulders. It always looks impeccable, and Calle looks like a proper
superhero. There is no doubt the look will be even better in the film with
proper lighting. I’m so excited for the film!
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
BEAST WARS MOVIE. Ok, not quite
but the synopsis given makes it clear inspiration (and some characters) is
being taken from that show. Please Paramount give me “live-action” Rattrap! I
need that little asshole back in my life.
Supernatural Prequel In Development
No one wants the Mary and John Winchester
show. Their story has already been told. I do not need to see the power of
their love save the universe or whatever the synopsis says. Having said, I
would watch the first couple episodes at minimum because I’m a sucker.
Crash And Spyro Cartoons Coming to Apple TV+
Apple will (eventually) give me a
reason to ponder using their streaming service. All that's known thus far is
the series is being made. It's likely quite early in production so it may be
some time before we actually see it.
Final Fantasy IX Is Getting An Animated Series
But why? Like, FF9 fans really
love the game, but it’s not something that has a place in the wider
consciousness. It's a strange choice. Stranger still is the choice to let Cyber
Group Studios handle the adaptation as their resume is…less than immaculate. This
series too appears to be super early in development so we all will probably
forget it is coming by the time we see it.
Sony Bought Housemarque...And Bluepoint?
As soon as Returnal sold
well, the writing was on the wall. That game was the last-ditch effort of the
studio and while it was successful, it's unclear if it was enough to save the
company. That’s where Sony steps in, as they usually do, to acquire studios
they close relationships with like Insomniac and Sucker Punch.
Also, the Japanese Twitter
account posted an image that included Bluepoint Studios as part of Sony before
quickly deleting it. It's probably a mistake, but there's a good chance the
next Roundup had a blurb about Sony purchasing that company.
