Halfway Through, Loki Is The MCU's Platonic Ideal
Loki is not a puzzle box mystery like its Disney+ predecessor WandaVision. Nor is it a rollicking adventure series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It is certainly not a gritty character study like Daredevil. The show is perhaps closest to the film Doctor Strange, the other magic and time travel-focused entry in the franchise.

last week’s issues are reviewed below. Also, there is going to be at least one
extra post this week; a Loki post will be going up on Tuesday. Then the newly-bi-weekly

Featured Review: Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Bilquis Evely
Colors: Matheus Lopes
Letters: Clayton Cowles
Cover: Evely and Lopes
Tom King is one of the most interesting writers in comics today. Not necessarily due to the content of the art he produces, though there is certainly much to discuss on that front. It is the different ways the work is viewed that is most fascinating.

News Roundup 06.19.2021
Hey y’all. I apologize for the tardiness of this roundup. I intended it to go up Wednesday but my work schedule got in the way. Anyway this is going to be a very E3-focused edition of the Roundup covering a few dozen games. Before that, there is some TV and comics news so there’s a little something for everyone. Also, I want to announce the News Roundup will be going biweekly. There typically is not that much news per week and I have a bunch of ideas for posts that need somewhere to go.
Anyway, on to the news!

Comic Reviews 06.14.2021
Hey y’all. We have an all-Batman reviews today. It is an interesting pair of complimentary issues showing some of Batman’s versatility as a character. Yesterday, we did a Featured Review about Jonathon Hickman’s final X-Men issue. That was pretty fun. E3 was this weekend (And is still technically going for a couple days?) so expect a lot of that in the News Roundup this week. It’s gonna be fun.
Anyway, on to the reviews!
Spoilers for: Batman: The Detective #3, Detective Comics #1037

Featured Review: X-Men #21
Writer: Jonathon Hickman
Artists: Nick Dragotta, Russell Dauterman, Lucas Werneck,
and Sara Pichelli
Colors: Frank Martin, Matthew Wilson, Sunny Gho, and Nolan
Woodard
Letters: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Designer: Tom Muller
Cover: Leinil Francis Yu and Gho
Two years ago, Jonathon Hickman rocked the comics world with
the most radical X-Men revamp since Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely introduced
Cassandra Nova and made Beast a catboy. House of X and Powers of X rebuilt
the concept of mutants from the ground up by establishing a new home—once
again, an island nation for mutants—new allies, new threats, and the revelation
a 40-year-old character had been hiding their mutant nature the entire time.
From there, Hickman launched X-Men with Leinil Francis Yu. While Yu disappeared from the series several issues ago, X-Men #21 is Hickman’s final issue. Though it certainly does not feel like the end. It is telling this issue is titled ‘The Beginning’ as it feels like the story has just begun with story threads from early issues only returning in recent issues. They will continue in the upcoming Inferno story.

News Roundup 06.09.2021
Hey y’all. News Roundup is back! Just in time to cover the
few interesting pieces of news since the last installment prior to E3. I haven’t
decided if I will do E3-specific roundups—i.e. a Microsoft one, Square-Enix
one, etc.—or save it for a supersized roundup next week; it could be a bit of
both. I have a ton of articles in the works and there are three (!) big game
releases this week that I am excited to dive into so time may be limited. Keep
an eye out either way.
Anyway, the news!
