Video Game News Roundup 07.24.2020

This picture is clickbait

So, there’s been some video game news this week. There was a Mini Nintendo Direct that revealed a few interesting games for next. Microsoft also held an event to finally show some games for the new Xbox. It was a mostly underwhelming showcase with a few standout games. Ubisoft had an event as well but there wasn’t much new there and it would be more worth your time to read about how Ubisoft treats employees than talk about their games. The makers of Suikoden 2 also announced a Kickstarter for their new game, Eiyuden Chronicle, but there isn’t much else to say about that quite yet. Anyway, let’s get to the games!

Balan Wonderland

This people at the head of this game have worked on a number of games together, including both Sonic Adventure games and NiGHTS Into Dreams. Obviously, they know how to make a 3D platformer. That in of itself has me pumped but the trailer gives a better idea of what its going to be like and it screams Billy Hatcher. Without the giant eggs, of course. It’ll be on almost everything, so I’ll definitely give it a shot.

Everwild

I can’t tell you anything about this game. The trailer is a mood trailer and I love that mood and the themes it promises. We’ll see how it follows through. It should also be noted that the art style is fantastic. Because I’ve always loved this kind of aesthetic, this game was always going to appeal to me. Once we learn more, I’ll let you know.

Tell Me Why

Dontnod is one of the most interesting developers on the scene. Best known for the Life Is Strange series, they just tell good stories. Those games are vaguely similar to the Telltale games but with much more human and interesting stories. Tell Me Why appears to be in that mold and that makes it an immediate buy from me. Having a trans protagonist is super cool and I trust them to do right by him.

Medium

I don’t particularly care for horror games but this one has two going for: It feels more thriller than horror and it’s the only game at the Xbox presentation that seems to be taking advantage of the Xbox Series X hardware by using the SSD to load multiple instances at once. Those two things have me intrigued. Hopefully, it can live up to being the only reason to buy the new Xbox. Of course, I’ll just play it on my PC because it’s an Xbox game and I can do that.

Shin Megami Tensei V

It feels like this game was announced 20 years ago. I’ve only played spin-off SMT games like Persona and Devil Summoner so I’m eager to finally play some mainline games. And boy, does this look like a SMT game. God is dead, there’s an apocalypse, and only a very important teenager can decide the fate of humanity. That’s some prime JRPG shit that hits a ton of my pleasure points.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne

This is a HD remaster of a PS2 game. Nocturne is supposed to be one of the more punishing games in a series of punishing games. Because I haven’t played many of main SMT games, I’ll likely try this one as a warmup for SMTV the same year. Beyond it being an SMTV game, I don’t know much about it and the trailer doesn’t reveal too much. But I’m excited to attack and dethrone God once again.
