Thanks, Culture of Gaming, for this handy picture |
As I wrote a couple weeks ago, my most anticipated games of 2020 have been released. I’ve played and beat them, so what is there to look
forward to now? Turns out, a ton. So, I present to you a fake Top 5 (There are
seven games). These games are listed in release order, so this isn’t truly a
ranking though they are, coincidentally, almost in that order as well. But
enough preamble, let’s dive in!
Honorable Mentions: Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road, Rune
Factory 5, Little Town Hero, Marvel’s Avengers, Yakuza; Like a Dragon
1.The
Wonderful 101 Remastered
Way back, at the dawn of the 2010s, I remember reading a
short piece about this game in Nintendo Power that made me incredibly
interested in this game. I followed the game closely despite having never
played it. You see, I was not one of the 17 million in the world to buy a Wii U
so the new release will be my first opportunity to experience this title after
a decade of anticipation. The combat looks really interesting and the game just
has so much personality that I cannot help but get excited looking at it. It
comes out in less than a week, though, so y’all should check it out.
2.
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
Let’s go back to the early 2010s again. Xenoblade Chronicles
is an RPG set in a world that is 100% ocean except where the humans live: the
corpses of two ancient gods. If that doesn’t get you excited, I do not know
what else to tell you. The game was initially unreleased in the US for two years
before fans convinced Nintendo to put it out in EXTREMELY limited quantities.
So, I, and many others, have not experienced it. But now the HD remaster is
coming and it looks gorgeous. That, along with the incredible premise, is
enough to pick this one up without a doubt. Another decade of waiting is about
to come to a close.
3. Ghost
of Tsushima
Assassin’s Creed is back in July! I wrote about this
one yesterday, so you check that for my in-depth thoughts, but the most basic
version is that this game reminds me so much of my favorite AC games. The
group combat, the stealth options, the graphics. I love it all and I have
missed that style of game since AC Syndicate. Looking forward to this a
lot.
4.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Look, this is the third time I’ve written about this game
since 30 April. I am clearly very excited to play it. In last week alone, the
developers had spoken about how the game will be smaller than Odyssey (To
what degree is unclear) which is too big and not nearly interesting enough to
justify it. They have also let it be known that ship combat will be minimal.
That’s nice, since it’s bad. Along with a seeming return to, y’know, being an
assassin. I am over the moon. I am not sure I will make it a day one priority
(Gotta save for that PS5), but I will get it and likely enjoy it.
4.
Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions
I play a lot of sports games. Madden, Football Manager, and
Pro Evo being the most common. Now what if Pro Evo was an anime
game with cool superpowers and a dope storyline? I would play the hell out of
that. Unfortunately, what I just wrote is the vast majority of the info we have
on this. It may not even be a 2020 release as it has not announced date. That
won’t stop me from getting hyped though.
5.
Digimon Survive
I love Digimon. I have always loved it and always
will, even when it’s mediocre. Because of this, I buy the majority of the games
at this point. Also, I love the esoteric systems involved. This appears to be a
very different type of game from past releases though. Some sort of story-driven
RPG with some tactics gameplay. Count me in for that. What is really drawing me
in is the art style. This game looks absolutely incredible. Everything about it
make me want to dive into that world. Regrettably, this game does not have a
release date more specific than 2020. So, we’ll see what happens. Until then,
watch the trailer.
6. Final
Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition
Way back in the day, my brothers and I somehow managed to get
all the accessories to play games like The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures
(I would also like a remaster of that please). Those accessories also allowed
us to play Crystal Chronicles. I have a lot of good memories with this
game and I can’t wait to revisit it. It is another game with no release date,
although the expectation is sometime this summer. That might change with the pandemic
though. We’ll see.
7. Tales
of Arise
I love the Tales games. They have so much personality
and just the right kind of different from similar games. Having said that, the
series needs a shakeup. Tales of Berseria is one of my favorites in the
series but it, at times, feels too much like the previous entries. That does
not appear to be a problem in Arise. This game has a brand-new look for
the series and appears to be transitioning to a full action RPG instead of the
Linear Motion Battle System, which is not typically as fluid as I would like. The
tone seems to be following from Berseria in that it is a bit darker
overall. This is, yet again, a game with no release date so we’ll see when it
is released. Whenever that is, I’ll let y’all know how it is.
