Supernatural Redeems Then Kills A Longtime Character

What is Supernatural about now? Fate vs Free Will seems to be the primary theme. That has yet to truly manifest itself though. There have been hints of it; a short exchange here, a mournful glance there. But that’s all. Everyone thinks Chuck as abandoned the universe so there is no conflict here. Free Will won as far as the boys are concerned.

The end of “Atomic Monsters” muddles the picture even further. When Chuck sits down to make the end of “Supernatural” darker, the boys’ actions get darker. They kill a teen vampire that sacrifices himself to save his parents. Not only is killing “good monsters” something Sam and Dean don’t particularly do anymore, they do it so nonchalantly that I must wonder if it’s part of Chuck’s darker ending. If it is, then does Team Free Will have any chance of freeing themselves from Chuck’s control? Sure doesn’t seem like it. The implication is that Chuck can control them whenever he wants.

Which brings up another big question: How powerful is Chuck right now? We know he isn’t powerful enough to leave the universe, but he can still snap Becky and her family out of existence. He can also seemingly change the universe as it stands via his writing. Is he at 99% power then? The only thing Chuck can’t seem to do is leave, but at this point it is unclear if he wants to anymore. If Chuck is back to messing with Sam and Dean, he must have decided to stay and deal with them, right? Otherwise he’d be trying to figure out how to regain his full strength.

Speaking of messing with people, let’s talk about Becky. This is a character that has been around for a decade, although with scant appearances. She’s been both a fun parody of a fangirl and an offensive stereotype of one. But I love her anyway. And this episode was her ultimate redemption as a character. Becky was last seen forcing Sam to fall for her. That episode ended with Becky realizing that not only would not love her, she needed to better herself before anyone would. And she did it! She got help for her unhealthy outlook on the world and advanced as a person. Now she has husband and two children. She’s writing again and runs an incredibly successful Etsy shop. Becky had a happy life until her shitty ex (Who happens to be a vengeful God) shows up and forces her to help him find purpose. Poor woman. And then, after helping Chuck rediscover writing, Becky has to watch him kill her husband and children. As she protests, he does the same to her.

What a way for this character’s story to end. What was the point? To show Chuck is an angry, petty God? He has consistently displayed those characteristics since at least Season Eleven, and arguably going back to his first appearance. Once again, Supernatural has offed another female side character for seemingly no reason. But at least we got to see Becky, as a mature happy woman, one last time. Thanks, I hate it.

Best quotes:

Becky: "Instead of reading your stories, I kept writing my own."
Chuck: "Your own Supernatural?"
Becky: "Where the guys didn't have hunt monsters all the time. They just sit around and do laundry and talk, you know? I mean, that's what people like the most, anyway."

Dean (After interrogating a high schooler): "Smart kid. He's actually got a full ride to IU. Don't underestimate the mascot, man. The guy's got access, knows a lot about cheerleaders. In a mostly non-creepy kind of way."
