Hey y'all. Welcome to the new Monday version of the News Roundup. We have a ton of big announcements to discuss, from comics to TV to...whiskey? Look, there's a lot going on here so I won't hold here too long. Onto the news!
Amazing Spider-Man has Artists!
The next era of Spider-Man—now known as 'Beyond'--has some
artists announced! As anticipated, Patrick Gleason will be drawing issues in
addition to writing. Joining on art will be Sara Pichelli and Michael Dowling.
Pichelli is an artist on par with Gleason and the pair’s issues are sure to be
feasts for the eyes. Dowling is not nearly as good as the aforementioned artists
but is certainly capable of holding his own. The (giant) creative team for this
new epoch is shaping to maybe be something special.
Also, Art Adams is doing covers and that is real nice.
New Batgirl Costumes
As much as I prefer Barbara in the role of Oracle, if she's
going to be Batgirl part-time, she needed a better costume than recent years.
This is certainly better than what she before and is a smart combination of the
Burnside outfit’s best features with a more traditional form.
Cass and Stephanie also appear to be getting new looks,
though they may be the same as those in Infinite Frontier #0. We have
yet to be given a clear look at them. What we can see look great though!
New Arakawa Manga
Hiromou Arakawa, the mangaka behind Fullmetal Alchemist and
Silver Spoon, has a new manga coming! The only info on it is the above
sketch, but who cares? Arakawa is a phenomenal creator and any news of her
doing something new is welcome.
What if… Got a Trailer
Why does this show look that episode of The Blacklist where
they animated half of it? Surely the biggest franchise is history can afford
some better studios than Flying Bark. Star Wars got Studio Trigger and Production
I.G.!
As for the content of the trailer, it seems pretty
uninspired. ‘What if Peggy Carter was Captain America’ and 'What if Black
Panther was also Star Lord’ are as basic as it comes. Jeffrey Wright sounds
great as Uatu though! This is hopefully not his last appearance in the MCU.
Star Wars Visions Gets A Teaser
After watching the trailer(?) for this series, I realized
it’s the only onscreen Star Wars project announced that makes me genuinely
excited. Not only did Disney pay out for some of the biggest anime studios (and
a couple others), it seems to be taking a similar approach to What If… but
allowing the creators significantly more control and permitting the canonocity
to be flexible at best. It’s a more thrilling approach than those Marvel and
Lucasfilm have taken recently.
Sk8 the Infinity Sequel Coming
I recently watched Sk8 The Infinity. It’s quite good
and I recommend everyone watch it. And it’s getting a sequel! Or second season?
It’s very unclear and not much has been said. The most obvious tracks to take
it down are a new cast with a new story and the current in some other
competition. Maybe the gang takes a trip abroad and stumble into underground
skating there? My preference would be the new cast as our current group have
already completed their character arcs but hanging with them some more would be
fun.
Resident Evil is Getting a New Whiskey
Who wants to help me purchase this scotch I won’t drink for
20 years? As a lifelong fan since last year when I finally played the games, I
would very much like to have a bottle.
Blackwind Announced
I am a simple man; if I see mechs firing rockets and platforming,
I am intrigued. The action does look like there's potential for it to lack
legibility but that's a problem for the future. The game has no release date currently,
so I expect a 2022 date. Look forward to it.
Sony buys Nixxes
Recently, Sony has ported a couple of their first party
games to PC. The results have been mixed. With all evidence pointing towards
this being a pillar of their strategy going forward, the resources should be
placed into it to ensure successful ports. Buying a studio known for that makes
complete sense. It’s just, y’know, corporate consolidation sucks. My
preference would be Sony just hiring them instead of engaging in this arms race
with Microsoft.
Assassin's Creed Infinity Announced
The next AC will be an ongoing live service game just like
the last three. The difference being that it seems the plan is for this to
replace future ACs for a while as it will gain new regions over time. This is
clearly where the series has been heading for since Origins. I just wish
they’d make another Assassin’s Creed game instead of Historical Witcher 3. I
guess have to try Ghost of Tsushima again or something.
Switch OLED Revealed
The Switch Pro this is not. It is, however, a definitive
upgrade over the current SKUs while keeping the possibility of a Pro or Switch
2 alive. With the improved screen, the Switch has finally become the PS Vita
successor it has been striving to be, which is fun. Nintendo Switch OLED
Edition is an extremely bad name though. Like, unbelievably bad. I hope it
sells poorly though. Please give Nintendo an excuse to update their hardware. I
beg of you.
