News Roundup 02.17.2021

Hey y’all. Sorry this is late, but I decided to delay it to ensure I could get the news from the Nintendo Direct in here. It was pretty exiting and about half of this post is dedicated to it. But first, some quick blog news.

First up, I finally finished the Supernatural final season reviews.  That was a ton of fun and I might look at doing something big like that again in the future. Next, I expected the Comic Reviews to return from hiatus March 1st. I have missed doing those quite a lot so to be able to get back into that will be exciting. I also may be changing the format a bit, but that has yet to be finalized. Finally, this Friday I will be starting a recurring ‘Feature’ series of posts. These will range from reviews to more singular topic-focused posts. For example, this is where the announced series of Kingdom Hearts retrospective redoes will slot, though not this week. This week is about Resident Evil.

With that out of the way, let’s jump into the news!

X-Corp Finally Releasing

Tini Howard and Alberto Foche are finally launching a series that was announced in 2019. It features Monet and Angel running the corporate businesses of Krakoa. I love Howard’s writing and, based on preview pages, Foche is going to be a great fit on this series. I cannot wait to read this in May. Now we just need that Moira X book, and all the announced X-series will be out.

Static Is Back

Kicking off the return of Milestone is the line’s most famous hero. Vergil Hawkins is back, and he has a slick new design that I cannot get enough of. Based on the previews of Hotstreak’s design, that seems to be the kind of style the series is looking for. Static will see the return of co-creator Denys Cowan and Reggie Hudlin, which is very exciting.

Following Static in April will be Icon & Rocket and Hardware in June and August, respectively. I am ecstatic to read these and you can expect them to be covered in the Comic Reviews when they return.

Six Days in Fallujah Returns For Some Reason

This is the most baffling item on this list. For those unaware, this is a game from 2009 based on the conflict in Fallujah where US forces allegedly (read: certainly) used white phosphorous on the citizens of the town. It is a horrific moment in the history of a country and conflict filled with them. The game was never finished because of the understandable backlash the developers received as they tried to whitewash the event. Konami dropped it and no other publisher was willing to pick it up.

Well, it’s back and being made by a company that has only made one other game, a VR title few people liked. And the man in charge--who was also heavily involved in the original iteration and spent the last decade making war simulators for the military--has already done rounds of interviews in which he explains he does not wish to make a political statement with this inherently political video game.

Also, the US military is probably funding this game. The PR statements capitalize “Soldier”, something basically only they do and the only reason a video game company would do so. So, y’know, fuck this game.

Ratchet and Clank Lands in June

Hype! That’s all there is to say. Insomniac’s latest drops on June 11th. That’s all there really is to say. The game looks incredible, as I have covered previously. Also, they still won’t tell us what the new lombax is named so my hopes of Mallet remain. You can probably expect some form of coverage of that game here in June or July so look forward to it!

Pyra and Mythra Join Smash in March

This is cool; Xenoblade Chronicles is cool. If another character from the series was going to make it into the game, it was these ones. They look like cool characters, though we’ll have wait for more details before I can be absolutely sure. I was personally hoping for Crash Bandicoot or Phoenix Wright, but what can you do? Looking forward to trying them out.

Famicom Detective Club Coming In May

I had never heard of these games prior to today. Probably because they are Famicom adventure games that never released in the west. No matter the reason, these remakes look cool. The aesthetic is very much a classic anime adventure game/visual novel look and I love. The little teases of story have my attention. It all screams something I will enjoy. Can’t wait for May.

Mario Golf Super Rush Launches in June

Mario Golf is back! And it looks like exactly what we have all wanted. A full-fledged, goofy Mario golf game that also has an RPG story mode. This is going all the way back to the classic games in the series. I could not be more excited. Wish the character in story mode wasn’t a Mii. I am very much over the aesthetics of those models, but it is a character creator that Nintendo already has and likely requires minimal work to implement in their games. Doesn’t matter because I will be picking this one up.

Project Triangle Strategy Announced

I did not like Octopath Traveler. It is one of the coolest looking games I have played though. Project Triangle Strategy—this game cannot get an official title soon enough—is the sequel to that game, although it seems to be a sequel in the way that Final Fantasy II is a sequel. Maybe even less than as PST is a tactical RPG. That certainly has my attention, as does the promise of being able to make important choices that affect the story. Also, this series is now called HD-2D, a very bad name.

Kotaro Uchikoshi and Kazutaka Kodaka Found World’s End Club

From the writers of the Zero Escape and Danganronpa series, comes World’s End Club, a video game. That’s really all that was revealed at today’s Nintendo Direct, though I am certain there is more here than meets the eye. The art style is cute, and I am sure absolutely no gruesome acts of violence will be committed in it. Not a single one.

Skyward Sword HD In July

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is one of the most underrated games in the series. Sure, it has some pacing problems but it a lot of fun. It also functions as an interesting midpoint between tradition Zelda design and Breath of the Wild. To have it updated and released in HD is exciting. They even adapted the controls to not have motion controls if you don’t want to use them. Everyone should check it out when it releases.
