Hey y’all. This past week had a deluge of news the type of which
I cover on this site. From the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Avatar: The Last
Airbender to the Persona 5 sequel coming west. We’ve got it all here
so let’s jump right into it.
WB Movies coming to HBO Max Simultaneously
So, WB—or AT&T--saw the reactions to the Wonder Woman 1984 release schedule and thought, “Yes. We need more of this.” Because of that, they have decided to extend that treatment to every single film in 2021. This has been rightfully ridiculed, but it was inevitable one of these studios would take this step. I am just surprised it was not Disney, who have an unbelievable dearth of new content.
It is surprising they did not wait to see how Wonder Woman turns out prior to making this announcement though. Maybe there was a mass subscription following that news and they want to replicate it? This is going to be bad for theaters, likely accelerating their demise in the US. That is incredibly sad, and I hope some are able to stay around. Having said that, I likely will not be in a theater in 2021 so it is nice that I will be able to see these films.
Hailee Steinfeld and Florence Pugh are officially in Hawkeye
I do not have enough exposure to Hailee Steinfeld to say I
am a fan. She seems like a good actor and making her Hawkeye makes perfect
sense. Bringing along Florence Pugh, whom I am definitively a fan of, almost guarantees
I will watch at least the first episode of this show. I have middling interest
in what seems to be an adaptation of the Matt Fraction/David Aja series. That comic
is so good there is little to hope of this show matching it, especially since
it is likely confined to the MCU style. Read that comic; its about 20 issue and
you will not regret it.
Everyone is in the new Spider-Man
The next Spider-Man movie is going
to be one of two things: an unmitigated disaster or a marketing mirage. There
is a small chance it is both. With Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Kirsten
Dunst, (probably) Emma Stone, Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, Benedict Cumberbatch,
and Charlie Cox reprising rolls from other movies (And Daredevil) and
the need to continue the ongoing stories of both the MCU Spider-Man movies and
the MCU at large, this movie is probably going be stuffed with significantly
more characters than it can handle. Or most those characters are relegated to
cameos or post credit scenes and this is all a misdirect to get people excited for
another mediocre Iron Man installment disguised as a Spider-Man movie.
Exciting.
Ava Duvernay is working on a Naomi series
Naomi is a fantastic comic. Unfortunately, the
character’s subsequent appearances have been less than stellar (I covered many
of them in my Comic Reviews, you can check them out). Ava Duvernay has a good record
as a producer, although it is definitely not perfect. To have her on board a CW
series for what could be a very meaningful character. She likely is not working
on the show directly, but it gives me hope that this series will be good.
Oscar Isaac is Solid Snake
This makes sense. I do not have much faith in this adaptation,
but Oscar Isaac will be a good Snake. He is apparently lobbied for it in the past,
so he has some investment. Between this
and the Moon Knight show, he is going to be busy. I would like to see Isaac do fewer
franchise though. His best performance (and probably best film) I have seen is Ex
Machina and that feels more like where his strengths lie. Cannot blame him
for getting the bag though.
Joelle Jones is doing a Wonder Girl series
Coming out of Future State, Joelle Jones will continue creating
the adventures of Yara Flor, presumably showing her origin and then continuing
adventures. This makes sense given the announcement of a Yara series being in
the works at The CW. Gotta buildup recognition for the character. My experience
with Jones’ work is limited but positive. I will probably give this one a shot.
There's a new Avatar OGN Coming
There is a new Avatar: The Last Airbender OGN
releasing soon. I have not read any of the follow up comics, but I know others
that have and swear by them. Suki is a cool character without much screen time
in the series. Giving her a starring role and more character development is an
excellent premise for a standalone adventure. There is a (very small) chance I
pick this one up as my first experience in the ATLA Expanded Universe.
Persona 5 Strikers Is Releasing Worldwide February 23, 2021
Finally. Finally, Atlus has announced the Persona 5 sequel will be releasing outside Japan. Coming almost exactly a year after the initial, P5S is coming to Switch and PlayStation 4. Of course, this game is an entirely different genre from the previous. This is a musou game akin to Dynasty Warriors or Hyrule Warriors, so it is an action game as opposed to turn-based. It is exciting to be getting this game, even if it took this long.
