News Roundup 10.16.2020

This isn't news; I just think its cool

Hey y’all. We have so much exciting news this week. I can’t wait to discuss it. First, I wanted to let everyone know the Featured Review this weekend will be The Flash #763 so come back Sunday to check out my thoughts on the beginning of the Kevin Shinick-Clayton Henry era. Anyway, he’s my thoughts on the news of the week!

Live Action Spider-Verse Is Coming

Last week, it was announced that the new Spider-Man movie would have Doctor Strange in it. To me, this confirmed that there would be multiverse shenanigans happening as that will be the focus of the next Doctor Strange movie. That conclusion immediately gave credibility to the rumors of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appearing in this movie. Then, the reports got more solid this week.

This led Sony to put out a statement that can be interpreted one of two ways. Either “They haven’t actually signed their contracts yet” or “we aren’t ready to announce this yet”. Whichever is true, this makes me interested in the next Spider-Man movie. Bringing the really good live action Spider-Men (Tom Holland is fine, everyone chill) for a team up sounds fun. I don’t have much hope it will be good though, seeing how bad they botched the last one. We’ll just have to wait and see.

PS5 UI Finally Revealed

I could not be more hyped for the PlayStation 5. The console looks incredible, has some really cool games, and—I can finally say—has a really cool UI. Aesthetically, it’s essentially PS4 UI But Good. There are a ton of interesting features that make it stand out though. First is the OS-level integration of the PS Store and similar apps. That will just make using them significantly quicker and easier. There’s a separate Media tab for Netflix, Hulu, etc. to keep the home screen from getting cluttered. It’s very nice.

My favorite feature is the cards on the pop-up menu. Most of these are decided by the developers. The example used is a list of levels in Sackboy’s Big Adventure and how far you are to finishing the various tasks and goals within them. You can then select them and jump right into that level. Developers can also make hint videos to help players find collectibles.

Other cards have a bunch of features that will improve interactions with friends, but most important is that cards can show you when your friends are queuing for multiplayer games and can jump over there and straight into the same queue! It looks so nice and I’m very excited for it even though I don’t play much online.

This is all very hype and I can’t wait to put these features to use.

Digimon Survive Delayed

As you may remember, Digimon Survive was on my list of most anticipated games of 2020. It still looks really good but has unfortunately—and predictably—been delayed to next year. Honestly, I may not play it though. I recently watched the Last Evolution Kizuna film (Which I’ll probably write about) and it hit me unexpectedly hard and got me thinking about some stuff. Anyway, the game looks really good; support it when it releases.

Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition Physical Edition on 1 December

If you follow me on Twitter, you may have seen me playing through all the Devil May Cry Games for the first time (Except the reboot. I played that long ago on the PS3). I have mixed feelings about some individual games, but I really like the series overall. Yes, that includes said reboot and DMC2, both of which are not nearly as bad as people would lead you to believe.

This is all to say that I am extremely excited to play DMC5SE, something I was initially going to do digitally as it’s a launch title for PS5. Now I’m thinking I’ll wait a couple weeks. On top of PS5 games, I have plenty of PS4 games I’ve been saving for PS5 anyway. Also, if I was rich, I would definitely get the $6,000 Vergil Coat Edition. It is a very nice coat.

Future State Takes Over DC Comics

Following the conclusion of Dark Nights: Death Metal, the regular DC Universe is taking a two-month break. The events of that comic will seemingly break time and we’ll get a look at the future of DC. This features mostly smaller and unknown—to me at least—talent getting a shot to prove they can write for one of the Big Two. And almost every series has an interesting premise! I doubt all of them will be good, but there is hope.

I haven’t been this interested in the DC comic line in about two years. Up and coming creators combined with new characters and cool concepts is exactly what this company needs. Some highlights of the lineup:

Future State: Kara Zor-El, Superwoman by Marguerite Bennett and Marguerite Sauvage

Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman by Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, Jen Bartel, L.L. McKinney, Alitha E. Martinez and Mark Morales

Future State: Green Lantern by Geoffrey Thorne, Tom Raney, Josie Campbell, Ryan Cady and Ernie Altbacker, with Sami Basri and Clayton Henry

Future State: Aquaman, by Brandon Thomas and Daniel Sampere

Also, please PLEASE just let Wally live. Why is he a villain again? We don’t need this. Just let him be the Flash. Its not that hard to make it work. There’s 18 Robins and 3 Batgirls. I’ll probably buy the first issue though to see what’s up. I love Flash too much.

As always, feel free to give your thoughts in the comments or on Twitter at @alexraysnyder. And if you like what you read here, consider throwing a couple bucks my way on Patreon to help cover costs.
