Welcome to the PlayStation 5 blow out! Yesterday, Sony showed off their next generation console for the first time. There have been plenty of hints and details shared but no games had been shown nor had the console itself been. And now they’ve shown what I imagine is a huge chunk of the first six to twelve months of big PS5 games. So, I’m going to take a look at the ones I am vaguely interested in. That means no Resident Evil or Godfall, which look like perfectly fine if uninteresting games. It’s actually incredible that Sony showed such a variety of games that I can write about 14 games and leave those out.
First up, let’s discuss the PS5 itself. This is the strangest console I have seen in some time. I like it though. It’s somewhat alien and I find that infinitely more interesting than the Switch (Which is literally just a tablet) or the Xbox Series X (A computer tower). I do wonder if it sits flat on the long side or if I’m going to be forced to stand it up, so it doesn’t wobble. Also, I wish the color scheme were inverted like a tradition PS2, 3, or 4. I just don’t like white much.
On to the games!
Spider-Man:
Miles Morales
When I inevitably make a Top 5 PS4 Games post, Marvel’s Spider-Man will be on that list. It is an incredibly fun game with gorgeous graphics and an engrossing story. It is one of my four platinum trophies. I could not get enough of it. I am also VERY on the record as a Mile Morales stan. He is the best, most interesting Spider-Man and has been almost from his 2011 inception. The OG Miles suit is one of the best costumes ever.
The end of the first game heavily suggested that Miles would
be taking a more active role in the sequel, but it turns out the sequel belongs
to him. I could not be more excited! Miles deserves all the love in the world. I
am curious if this is considered a full sequel though. The two year turn around
time makes me think there will be a lot reused from the previous game and it
may be more of side game (regardless of size) before Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,
or whatever the final title is, is released in 2022 or so. Either way, this may
be enough to get me to buy a PS5 at or near launch.
Ratchet
& Clank: Rift Apart
Insomniac somehow has two games coming soon. This game sure looks like a Ratchet & Clank game. That’s not to be disrespectful. These are iconic games that have been on every Sony console since the PS2 and I enjoy them so much that I have played almost all of them (I skipped All 4 One). They are very similar games though. Good games, but very similar. It’s like Uncharted. There are no bad games and are very satisfying to play, but each game is an incremental change from the last. I don’t mind that one bit. Count me in.
Project
Athia
Stray
This game has a very cute cat that looks kind of like mine. The graphical fidelity is impressive, if not surprising. There are TV-headed people that look like they stepped out of Saga and an interesting, grimy cityscape. That’s about all there is, and it is enough to make me pay attention. I am a simple man.
Kena: Bridge of Spirits
Goodbye
Volcano High
In less than 12 hours, this game was already being “canceled” by some people for reasons that remain unclear to me. It has something to do with a member of the game’s team writing an article on Kotaku about how much porn games suck. I skimmed the article and didn’t see anything bad, so I don’t know what that’s about.
Ghostwire: Tokyo
I do not typically like horror. I couldn’t tell you what the
last horror movie I watched was. Until Dawn was the last horror game I
played, although it doesn’t have much in the way of horror. Horror-tinged
action game? Count me in. It gives me that little bit of uneasiness I don’t
mind while giving me something I actually want: a cool looking action game. Let’s
get it, Ghostwire.
Gran Turismo 7
This is a Gran Turismo game. That’s really all I can say about it. It’s solely on this list so that we can all collectively drool over the graphics. I may pick this is up at some point. I love a good racing game every once in a while, and this seems to be a near-launch title so I might need a game to play.
Solar Ash
When I first saw this game, I thought, “Look at this
indie-ass platformer.” Once I finished the trailer, my suspicions seemed to be confirmed
and that makes me very excited. I love games like this that are a nice change
from the games I typically play. Looking forward to finding out more and then getting
this when it releases.
Astro’s
Playroom
This game will come pre-installed on PS5 consoles. It’s meant to showcase all the cool features of the PS5 and its new DualSense controller. Which means I will definitely play it because it looks like a cute, fun little platformer and it will teach me how the system works. I am very excited to check this one out.
Bugsnax
I hate this trailer. When the narrator ate that cute little strawberry creature, I about shit a brick. I was not ready, and it colored my impression of the game. It may always color my opinion of the game. Being from the creators of Octodad, I am likely to give this game a try though. I liked that game, even if I didn’t love it as much as some.
Horizon Forbidden West
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
I hate the Little Big Planet physics. They are too loose for their own good. In almost every other aspect, LBP is a wonderful, charming series. Sackboy is taking that and moving it into true 3D, my preferred type of platformer. Because of that, I will definitely give this game a try and hope it fixes the physics issue, especially with the lack of a level creator to suck resources. Count me in.
Little Devil Inside
The art style of this game has completely captured my imagination. It looks so cool. That can cover the fact that nothing else about the game looks extraordinary. Don’t get me wrong, nothing looks bad. If this releases and is a well-made, fun game with this art style, I will be over the moon. Give me more weird little games, Sony.
