Hey
y’all. Welcome back after our week off. You may notice that this series has
undergone a slight rebranding because I realized that I am not reading very
many comics at the moment and occasionally may not have a comic to review. Its
small potatoes though. Let’s talk comics and the relatively good week it was
for. Except Uncanny X-Men. That comic
is so bad I am not going to review it. I also am not going o buy it anymore.
Its just Age of X-Man stuff until Jonathan Hickman arrives for me.
Comics Reviewed: Superman #11, Naomi #5
Superman #11
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Ivan Reis
Colors: Alex Sinclair
Inks: Joe Prado and Oclair Albert
Letters: Josh Reed
Cover: Reis, Prado, and Sinclair
Man,
this comic was such a delight until fucking Rogol Zaar came back. Throughout
Bendis’ time on the Superman comics, I have always enjoyed Action Comics more than Superman.
A big part of that is the insistence of this comic on putting the focus on the
near-inconceivably boring Rogol Zaar. He’s a big Doomsday-looking monster guy
that claims to have been responsible for destroying Krypton and only exists to
finish the job.
This
comic is about a big space fight Clark and Jon stumbled upon at the end of the
previous issue. A trio of aliens have descended upon Jor-El’s ship and its up
to his family to rescue him. Rogol Zaar is also here for a quick second before
he makes like a banana. Superman diffuses the situation peacefully in my
favorite portion of the comic. There’s always one scene in each issue that
demonstrates that Bendis really understands Clark and this is it. He gets some to
surrender peacefully while others require more force. Superman never throws a punch.
He raises his voice once. Yet he still manages to stop the bloodshed. It is
truly awesome.
Supes
then heads to find his father and they have a superspeed fight before Rogol
Zaar comes back and sucker punches Jor-El’s ship. Superman takes him outside so
they can fight. Zod shows up and attacks Jon. The last five or so pages focus
on this fight and SUpes realizinghe shouldn’t have rushed into this fight. When
it looks like all hope is lost and one of the alien armies attacks, Supergirl and
Krypto come flying in on a big hunk of rock! It’s a pretty dope moment.
As
always with this comic, the art is fantastic on this issue. Ivan Reis is one of
my favorite artists and he’s joined by his usual cohorts so it looks just as
good as you would expect. In particular, the blurring on the superspeed scene
is pretty cool. It did confuse me for a moment until Jon pointed out they were
going faster than him and everyone else. It’s a nice little touch
Verdict: Buy
Naomi #5
Writers: Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker
Artist: Jamal Campbell
Letters: Wes Abbott
Cover: Campbell
So,
we finally know where Naomi is from: An alternate universe! Let me tell you, I
did not see that coming. I really want to know more about this other universe
and the Crisis that occurred and gave people superpowers. It doesn’t appear to
be related to any Crisis that DC has published in the past so I wonder if we’ll
be getting a new Crisis event from Bendis in the near future. Don’t forget, Young Justice’s first arc in nominally
about the various crises so there seems to be clear foreshadowing.
We
also get to see Naomi’s powers, but its not really clear what they are. I think
most of that is because Naomi doesn’t know. But she ran (or flew or teleported
or whatever) straight from the cave to her best friend, whom I thought had disappeared
from the serious. I like her and would be her friend. If, y’know, she was real.
And close to my age. But I digress. Naomi explains to her that she absorbed the
cliffhanger box from last episode and it spoke to her. The box told Namoi her
origin story and then Naomi rushed straight over to tell her friend. Then, the
evil dictator of Naomi’s homeworld shows up. He looks like some sort of Cthulu
monster. Cool?
I
don’t have much else to say about this issue. It’s a really interesting
exposition dump. Jamal Campbell continues to knock it out of the park. You
could (probably easily) convince me thisis the best looking series on the
market. I hope the reason there is going to be a break after next issue so they
can maintain the whole team that has created one of my favorite comics. Please
don’t let Jamal Campbell leave, DC. Thanks in advance.
Verdict: Buy
