Hey y’all!
We’re back on schedule this week. It’s a pretty small list of comics I read
this week. No X-Men, but plenty of Spider-Man and Wonder Comics. I really
enjoyed these issues as whole, but the Comic
of the Week has to be Miles Morales: Spider-Man.
Saladin Ahmed, Javier Garron, and
the crew are building a fun little world for the best Spider-Man and I am here
for it.
Comics Reviewed: Young
Justice #2, Naomi #1, Superior Spider-Man #1, Miles Morales: Spider-Man
Young Justice #2
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Patrick Gleason and Emanuela Lupacchino
Colors: Alejandro Sanchez
Inks: Ray McCarthy (pg. 9-18)
Letters: Josh Reed
Cover: Gleason and Sanchez
This a
good comic. Bendis seems to be having so much fun. I also love that we’re
getting into Cassie’s head so soon. She has been one of my favorite legacy
heroes for a long time. And having here main conflict be with Zeus makes total
sense. The only problem I have with the story this issue is that the story
hardly advances. But the character insight really makes that a minor concern.
The art
here is still fantastic. Gleason is still fantastic and Lupacchino’s pages
barely register as being different. Everyone on the art team is firing on all cylinders
and working in concert with the narrative and Bendis’ writing.
Verdict:
Buy
Naomi #1
Writers: Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker
Artist: Jamal Campbell
Letters: Josh Reed
Cover: Campbell

Campbell is an absolute beast. This is a a gorgeous comic. The character
designs and fantastic. The small town Naomi lives in feels very real. There are
two pages of 12 panel grids with various characters reacting to events. The
last “panel” on both pages is Naomi breaking out of the panel and delivering
her take. What a shorthand for the themes of this story.
Speaking
of story, this issue has minimal story. It is mostly setting up Naomi’s world
before it inevitably comes crashing down. The characters are a lot of fun
though. Naomi has a varied cast of friends that hopefully won’t be left behind
and she digs into her history. This issue was pretty enjoyable and clearly is
leading somewhere.
On a
side note, this apparently a miniseries. After issue 6 there will be a hiatus
and a new #1 issue for the beginning of “season two.” That kinda has me more
interested. I’ve always liked the idea of comic books having “seasons” so it
should be fun.
Verdict:
Buy
Superior Spider-Man #1
Writer: Christos Gage
Artist: Mike Hawthorne
Colors: Jordie Bellaire
Inks: Wade Von Grawbadger
Letters: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Cover: Travis Charest
I don’t
know about this one, but I’m gonna keep on with it. The story was alright. I’m
fairly invested in Otto Octavius/Elliot Tolliver. Dan Slott turned him into an
incredible character. The essence of that is captured here, but it feels hollow.
Like a store brand version of the character. The Spider-Man dialogue is pretty
good.
The art,
however, is not good. I’m sure Hawthorne and the gang are nice people, but this
comic is ugly. The art isn’t bad. Everything is well framed and the storytelling
is clear. It just looks ugly. It is really unfortunate. The previous Superior
Spider-Man serious was absolutely beautiful so this is a huge step down.
Verdict:
Borrow
Miles Morales: Spider-Man
Writer: Saladin Ahmed
Artist: Javier Garron
Colors: David Curiel
Letters: VC’s Cory Petit
Cover: Marco D’Alfonso
This is
a really good comic. The first arc wraps up with Miles truly earning Captain America’s
trust and defining Miles’ different sort of relationship with Rhino. The only
thing I could really ask for is more of Miles’ family and friends. The dialogue
is very entertaining and lighthearted. I’ll be interested to see if Miles’ girlfriend
truly knows that he is Spider-Man. I also want see if she becomes his MJ or if
she’s just around for now. But that will probably take years to figure out.
Garron’s
art is fantastic. I have no idea why I didn’t like it at first. The way that
the characters emote, sometimes even through masks, is great. The art is clear
and has a ton of personality. Just fantastic.
